Advanced Biochar Dosing Calculator
Calculate the Optimal Quantity for Your Soil
Optimise the use of biochar in your soil with our Biochar Dosing Calculator. In a few simple steps you can get an accurate estimate of the amount of biochar to apply based on your soil characteristics and agronomic goals.
Why use Biochar?
Biochar is a natural soil improver, obtained by pyrolysis of biomass, known for its beneficial effects on soil:
- Improves soil structure and fertility
- Increases water retention and nutrient availability
- Supports soil microbiology
- It contributes to carbon sequestration, reducing CO₂ emissions.
How does the Biochar Calculator work?
Fill in the following fields to automatically calculate the ideal biochar dosage:
- Area to be treated (m²): The area on which biochar is to be applied
- Tilling depth (cm): The thickness of the soil you intend to till
- Soil type: sandy, clayey, loamy… influences absorption and recommended dosage
- Main objective: General fertility, improved structure, increased water retention, etc.
- Desired percentage of biochar (% volume): Recommended values between 0.5% and 10%, depending on agronomic requirements
- Bulk density of biochar (kg/m³): Find this information on the product data sheet
Click on ‘Calculate Dosage’ to obtain:
- Volume of worked soil
- Volume and weight of biochar required
- Dosage per m² and per hectare
- Estimated carbon sequestration (CO₂ equivalent)
Example of Result
Dati:
-
- Area: 10 ha
- Depth: 10 cm
- Type of Soil: Sandy
- Biochar percentage: 2%
- Biochar density: 350 kg/m³
Estimate:
-
- Worked soil volume: 10000.00 m³
- Biochar volume: 200,000 m³ (200,000 liters)
- Required biochar weight: 70000.0 kg
- Dosage: 0.70 kg/m² (7.00 Ton/ha)
- Estimated carbon sequestration: 192383.4 kg CO₂ eq.
Practical Tips for Biochar Application
- Embed the biochar well into the desired soil layer (e.g. 10 cm), using spades, forks or mechanical equipment.
- Personal protection: biochar can be dusty – use FFP2/FFP3 mask, goggles and gloves.
- Pre-wet or apply on windless days to facilitate distribution.
- Recommended activation: mix biochar with compost, manure or liquid fertiliser and let it ‘mature’ 1-2 weeks for optimal effect.
- Soil pH: biochar is alkaline. Check the pH of your soil before use, especially if the soil is already neutral or basic.
Free, customisable tool
Our calculator offers an estimate based on average values and your customised settings. Results may vary depending on the type of biochar, climatic conditions and specific soil characteristics.
Always consult an agronomist or expert for a professional amenity plan.
