absence (or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.groupen.it\/cose-la-pirolisi-usi-e-biochar\/\"><strong>near<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;absence) of oxygen, during which biomass is broken down into solid, liquid and gaseous products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co&nbsp;<strong>-pyrolysis<\/strong>&nbsp;, on the other hand, involves the simultaneous processing of multiple materials: in our case, municipal sewage sludge is treated together with lignocellulosic biomass (such as agricultural or forestry waste).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This combination improves the yield and quality of the&nbsp;<strong>biochar<\/strong>&nbsp;, because the lignin and cellulose of the plant biomass compensate for the critical issues of the sludge, rich in moisture and heavy metals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_use_sewage_sludge\"><\/span>Why use sewage sludge?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sewage sludge is an inevitable byproduct of urban wastewater treatment plants.
